    1. Remove sod & subsurface from the area. Use a string with stakes to determine the ending height of the block. Always slope a patio away from the house. Then, using 2x4's, form the patio matching up with the staked string. Lay plastic or landscape fabric as a weed barrier.

    2. Then spread 2-4" of a compactible base over the fabric, 4-6" for driveways. Notch a 2x4 the same height as the block to make a screed. Screed base level then compact with a plate vibrator or hand tamper. Repeat until the base is close to level with the screed. Use a thin layer of sand to bring to final level.

    3. Lay the rest row of block by starting in a corner along the house and work your way out. After block are laid, remove forms and replace with concrete edger or treated lumber. Finally, finish the patio by sweeping a fine sand into the joints.
